ATEC Ag Day

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Aberdeen Central High School students got an inside look at agriculture-related careers at the first ever Ag Day at ATEC Academy.

Approximately 275 CHS students attended Ag Day on Friday, March 28, sponsored by the Aberdeen Area Chamber of Commerce.

The event brought six ag-related businesses and organizations from the Aberdeen area into the ATEC building:

·         Agtegra

·         Groton Ag Partners

·         Northern State University Ag Business Program

·         Plains Commerce Bank

·         RDO Equipment Co.

·         SDSU Extension

At Ag Day, CHS students rotated from station to station to learn about each of the businesses and organizations.

For many of the students attending, Ag Day provided a chance to learn about an industry they hope to work in one day.

That includes CHS sophomore Russell Walberg.

“This is kind of an exciting experience because I can take a look at some programs and what they potentially have to offer,” he said.

Walberg, whose family owns a farm, said he’s considering going into an ag industry such as agronomy.

Fellow CHS sophomore Justice Malsom also lives on a farm and said he’s considering going into an ag-related industry. He, too, was excited to attend Ag Day.

“It could probably help me get a scholarship or something,” he said.

Gage Sauvage, also a sophomore, said he has considered going into an ag-related field such as crop spraying, which his stepfather does.

Sauvage said he was also looking forward to Ag Day.

“I think it’ll help me and just teach us some more stuff about what’s all available.”
