ABERDEEN, S.D. – Aberdeen Central High School students had a voice in the South Dakota political process at a student legislative meeting held Friday in the CHS Arena.
More than 50 Central students attended the event and asked questions of local legislators Logan Manhart, Al Novstrup and Carl Perry.
During his opening remarks, Novstrup encouraged civic engagement among the students.
“We determine your future.” Novstrup said. “… That’s why you have to pay attention to what happens in Pierre.”
Students asked numerous informed, thoughtful questions of the legislators, and CHS Teacher Kerry Konda served as event moderator. Topics included taxes, the CO2 pipeline, the Ten Commandments in school classrooms, and accountability for proposed school voucher programs.
Legislators were also asked if they were in favor of abolishing the Department of Education, which has been discussed at the national level.
“My answer is no,” Perry said.
While there are things that can be improved on, he said, closing the DOE completely would be wrong.
The lawmakers were also asked if they think the South Dakota Public School System is a good system.
“Yes, I think it’s a great system,” said Perry, whose children graduated from CHS. “… The education that’s offered to you here in Aberdeen is superb.”
Manhart, a CHS graduate, said he enjoyed his high school experience.
“I think the school system’s good,” he said. “We can always work at doing better, making sure test scores stay up and kids are getting the education they need and education they want.”
Novstrup said, “I think South Dakota’s got an excellent education system.”
A lot of smaller, rural districts face specific challenges, though he said that has been solved somewhat with the Northern State University Center for Statewide E-learning.
When it comes to education, Novstrup said the people are important—namely, the teachers.
“Having good teachers can make a whole bunch of difference,” he said, “and South Dakota’s got a lot of great teachers.”
