SMS students folding clothing

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Students and teachers at Simmons Middle School have been busy collecting, washing, sorting and folding piles of clothes—all for a good cause.

The clothing will be available for free at the SMS Wardrobe Share, which is taking place Thursday, Oct. 10, from 6:30-8 p.m. at the middle school.

The clothing event is a project of the SMS Student Senate, which is advised by Simmons teachers Madeleine Gonsoir and Mariah Wilkinson. The group collected donations of shirts, pants, sweatshirts, sweaters and gently used shoes from Sept. 25-Oct. 5.

This is the first time they have held this type of event.

“We hit the ground running,” Gonsoir said.

And it has definitely been a success, with thousands of clothing items donated. On Wednesday, Gonsoir, Wilkinson and Student Senate members held a movie and folding party in preparation of Thursday’s event.

At the Thursday wardrobe share, clothing for all ages and sizes will be available at no cost to families of students who attend Simmons Middle School, Simmons Elementary and May Overby Elementary. The event will take place in the cafeteria of Simmons Middle School, which is located at 1300 S. Third St.
