ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Aberdeen Public Schools Foundation Golden Apple Award winners were announced Monday at the school district’s all-staff in-service event.
The Golden Apple Award winners are:
· Al Dussault, O.M. Tiffany custodian.
· Carolyn Geyer, Holgate Middle School language arts teacher.
· Dena Sievers, Holgate Middle School math teacher.
Sponsored by the Aberdeen Public Schools Foundation, Golden Apple Awards are given annually to employees who have made an outstanding contribution to the district and demonstrated a dedication to excellence in education.
Each of this year’s winners received multiple nominations from co-workers, students and parents.
Dussault was praised by a co-worker as being “a joy to work with.”
“He takes pride in his work and makes life at school fun! He greets everyone with a smile and a jolly greeting, and he always has something positive to say. If anyone asks him for help, he immediately jumps up to assist. He never says, ‘I'll add it to my list’; he gets right to it!”
A colleague noted Geyer’s profound impact on her students and the entire school community.
“If you were to look up the definition of a dedicated teacher, selfless person, true friend, compassionate role model, etc., you would find Carolyn Geyer listed in all of those definitions. She demonstrates these qualities in every aspect of her life and work, setting an example that inspires everyone around her.”
Sievers was praised by parents, both for developing a “statewide powerhouse” MathCounts program at Holgate—and also for going above and beyond to help children who struggled with math.
“Mrs. Sievers took time and showed empathy, kindness, and caring to each one of my children. The best part is that I know that she does this for all of her students. I honestly don't know how she finds the time, but she does. Our community is blessed to have such a wonderful educator in our district. Her talents and heart for education are truly worthy of an award, and I think the Golden Apple Award is just the right one.”
