Student getting food in the cafeteria

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Aberdeen Public School District is receiving a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant to help purchase food service equipment.

Aberdeen Public Schools is receiving $8,832.44 in a National School Lunch Program Equipment Assistance grant from USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service. The funds will be used to purchase a steamer for Central High School.

Aberdeen is one of only two South Dakota school districts, along with Woonsocket, to receive funding from the grant program. The program aims to help schools serve healthier meals, improve food safety and support the School Breakfast Program.

“A well-rounded school meal program can be a vital contributor to a school’s success. These grants will help the Aberdeen and Woonsocket school districts make kitchen upgrades that ultimately benefit students and staff,” said George Seamon, interim director of the Department of Education’s Child and Adult Nutrition Services, in a news release.
