ABERDEEN, S.D. – Aberdeen Public Schools retired teacher Mona Smith is the winner of the 2024 Aberdeen Education Association Educator Plus Award.

Smith received the AEA award on Tuesday during a welcome back event held at Aberdeen Central High School.

Smith, who taught special education at CHS for 28 years, has made outstanding contributions in the classroom, sporting events and community activities. Since 1988, she has played a pivotal role in the smooth execution of basketball, volleyball and football state tournaments.

“Throughout her teaching career, she was an active member of AEA, advocating for the needs and rights of educators and students,” said AEA President Amanda Gauer. “Her commitment to education and her students has been unwavering, making a significant impact on the lives of many young individuals.”

The Educator Plus Award started in 1991 to recognize retired teachers who stayed active in the community and with children. It is a staff-nominated award, with the winner selected by a committee of current AEA members.

The AEA is the local chapter of the South Dakota Education Association (SDEA), an organization that supports public education professionals throughout the state.
