ice skating

Has your Lincoln child ever said something about ice skating during the school day? About 17 years ago Mr. Martens, Lincoln’s former gym teacher, had an idea to teach a new activity that’s an important life skill that you can do for multiple years, is a social activity, is something you can get better at, and that can be done during the school day and after school in the winter. The teachers agreed with the idea for the students to learn something new while also having fun. So in 2006, the first ice skating session was planned. Well, that was the start of the Lincoln tradition to go ice skating every year.

So, Lincoln staff created a checklist of everything that they needed in order to be able to let the kids go skating. First, they needed a month with good weather, not too hot, but also not too cold. So they decided on January or February. Second, they needed lots of ice skates and they got their skates from the Aberdeen Parks and Recreation Department. Third, they needed lots of people to help the kids, in case the kids couldn’t skate that well. The helpers in the past have been people like Wings players and Cougar hockey players. This year there were wrestlers from the high schools.

Ms. Anderson, a third grade teacher at Lincoln, wants to continue the Lincoln skating tradition. She said, “I feel it is important to continue the Lincoln skating tradition for a variety of reasons. Students look forward to being able to spend time with their friends. Teachers enjoy being able to see students laughing and having fun while making progress in their skating skills. I feel it is one of those opportunities to create lasting memories and I will continue to always do my part to carry on the tradition.”
