COVID-19 Frequently Asked Questions (updated 4/29/20)

April 6, 2020

As you have heard, Governor Kristi Noem has ordered all schools to remain closed for the duration of this school year.  While we continue to be disappointed that we cannot be together, we understand and support the need to keep everyone safe.  During this period of closure, we will continue to provide instruction through our flex learning model.  Each school will be providing directions for the next round of material pick-up and distribution of flex learning materials. In addition, we will continue to distribute complimentary meals on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  Please note we WILL be distributing meals on Friday, April 10 and Monday, April 13 even though those are designated holidays on the school calendar.

In collaboration with the City of Aberdeen, all playgrounds within the Aberdeen Parks, Recreation & Forestry System and the Aberdeen Public Schools will be closed starting Monday, April 6.    As the weather starts to get warmer, parks and playgrounds would be natural places for people to gather and we must do our part to encourage social distancing.  Additionally, we do not have staff available to clean playground equipment.

We know the end of the school year is always a very busy and exciting time with many milestone events.  We will continue to be in touch with you regarding details for various events.  We appreciate your patience and for all that you are doing to make the best of this difficult situation for our students.   Stay healthy and be well!

By working together, we will continue to improve the teaching and learning in our new remote environment.

COMPLIMENTARY meals continue to be available for all students with distribution at each elementary school on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays from 11:30 am-1:00 pm, Lakeside Estates from 11:15 am-12:00 pm, and Park Village from 12:15 pm-1:00 pm.  Each distribution includes 2 breakfasts and 2 lunches.  Last week we served 3,222 students and distributed 12,888 meals!

March 25, 2020

Yesterday Governor Kristi Noem announced that schools will be closed through Friday, May 1.  While this news is disappointing, we fully understand and support the need to keep our students, staff, and community safe.  The Aberdeen School District will continue to provide flex learning opportunities to serve students during the mandated school closures.  Please watch for updates from your child’s teacher and follow along with information posted on our school website.

We were thrilled to see so many families at our first grab and go meal distribution on Monday.  We distributed meals to over 700 students which far exceeded our expectations!   Now that we have a better understanding of the demand, we have made revisions to our process and will have many more meals available at each site.  Each student will receive four complimentary meals, 2 lunches and 2 breakfasts, at each distribution which will take place on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays during the time schools are closed.  Please review the serving times and menus on our District website.  We sincerely appreciate your patience and support as we learn new ways to serve our students.

If you didn’t have an opportunity to pick up your flex learning materials on Tuesday, staff will be available on Wednesday from 9:00 am-noon at each school.  Again, we can’t thank you enough for everything you are doing at home with your children.  This is a very difficult time for all of us and we will get through this together.  Please continue to reach out to us through e-mail or phone for anything that you may need.

The Aberdeen School District is committed to serving our students and will move to providing flex learning opportunities while schools are closed.  While these days cannot replace face-to-face instruction, they do provide a continuous learning model.  The provided lessons and assignments will align to S.D. content standards and meet current classroom expectations and learning objectives.  Flex learning materials and complete instructional details will be available for pick up at your child’s school as follows:

A limited number of individuals will be allowed to enter school buildings at one time.  Families should limit the number of individuals entering the building and must not enter if experiencing flu-like symptoms or suspect exposure to the COVID-19 virus.  Please pick up all learning materials, instruments, and medication. If you are unable to pick up materials at the times provided, please contact your school.

While schools are closed, the District’s Food Service program will provide complimentary “grab and go” meals for ALL students.  Pick-up locations will be at each elementary school from 11:30-1:00, Lakeside Estates from 11:15-12:00, and Park Village from 12:15-1:00.  Meals will be handed out on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (while schools are closed) with the menus posted on the District website. Each distribution day will provide 2 breakfasts and 2 lunches for each student.  Students should be present for meals to be distributed.
Please watch for additional communication through:

March 12, 2020

The safety of our students and staff is the highest priority of the Aberdeen School District.  Again, the District is in close communication with both the state and local health departments as the situation continues to unfold.

Consistent with our priorities and with a proactive response, the Aberdeen School District will suspend all non-essential activities effective 5:00 PM Friday, March 13, 2020. These non-essential activities include but are not limited to, in and out of town activities, field trips, competitions, PTA sponsored events, and other similar activities until further notice.

The District will suspend all facility use by non-Aberdeen School District organizations effective 5:00 PM Friday, March 13, 2020 until further notice.

As updates and situations related to COVID-19 evolve, the Aberdeen School District encourages you to monitor your email and the district website for the latest district information. The Aberdeen School District will continue to communicate with the state and local health departments as well as the South Dakota Department of Education and the Center for Disease Control (CDC).

Following the Department of Health recommendations, we encourage you and your family to practice good hygiene and stay home if symptoms of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) are present.

March 12, 2020

We wanted to let you know that we continue to monitor the situation related to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) and are aware that cases have been confirmed in South Dakota. We are taking steps daily to help mitigate the situation and keep our staff and students safe.

  • The Aberdeen School District continues to stay in close contact with local and state health officials to keep up-to-date as the COVID-19 situation unfolds.

  • The Aberdeen School District continues to report up-to-date information from local, state, and federal health officials with all staff and parents as it is received.

  • The Aberdeen School District has thoroughly reviewed cleaning procedures to ensure hospital-grade products continue to be used throughout buildings and classrooms as normal.  Custodial staff members have been issued additional time to provide the care necessary for detailed cleaning.

  •  The Aberdeen School District continues to remind students of proper hygiene practices as recommended by the CDC including washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, covering coughs and staying home when ill.

We will do everything we can to continue holding school as scheduled for the remainder of the year.  In the event that we are unable to serve the students in a safe and orderly environment, or if federal, state or local authorities advise or mandate such, then schools will be closed.  It is crucial that families discuss AND plan for the possibility of an altered school schedule just as you would plan for inclement weather.  The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority.  We appreciate your support as we all continue to learn more about this evolving situation.

March 10, 2020

Over the last several weeks, we have all watched news reports on the Coronavirus (COVID-19).  At this time being well-informed and well-prepared is important to the health and safety of you and your family.
Please remind your student of the importance of following good hygiene practices recommended by the CDC that prevent the spread of communicable diseases:

  • Cover your coughs and sneezes with a sleeve or a tissue.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, or use alcohol hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

The Aberdeen School District follows the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and works closely with City and State health officials in addressing public health concerns.  We will continue to work closely with these agencies to monitor the Coronavirus situation and take additional steps as necessary.  We share your concerns regarding this matter and appreciate your support, as well as working together in protecting your children, yourself and those around you by practicing good personal hygiene practices.
